"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." - Saint Augustine
Our quest to explore the enigmatic Chichen-Itza, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, located in the Yucatan Peninsula, and welcomes more than 2 million visitors a year. Enveloped in the company of friends, Jose and Ele, we embarked on a captivating journey, ready to uncover the mysteries of this ancient Mayan city. Gather around fellow Travel Junkies and lets dive into Chichen-Itza Unveiled: A Journey of Discovery with Friends.
The Journey Begins
Our day commenced at the luxurious Garza Blanca Resort and Spa, the perfect starting point for our grand Chichen-Itza expedition. With a meticulously planned tour, we were on a bus ride that would take us from comfort to culture. The excitement in the air was palpable as the bus left the resort behind and ventured into the heart of Mexico. There were several stops on this tour, but this blog will cover Chichen-Itza only. During the bus ride the excellent tour guides informed us about the history of the Yucatan Peninsula and Chichen-Itza, which was a welcomed added value to the tour.
A Pause at Obsidiana: Fueling Up for Exploration
Our journey was adorned with a pit stop at Obsidiana, a charming gift shop where we could re-energize with snacks and collect souvenirs. We were also treated by the staff with the history of obsidian and its uses in Mayan culture, and a special welcome ritual. The intriguing assortment of local delights and unique keepsakes heightened our anticipation. As we savored the local flavors and acquired tokens of our journey, the ancient site of Chichen-Itza seemed to draw closer.
Lunch and Contemplation
Before a morning of archaeological exploration, we gathered for a buffet-style lunch. The culinary delights were a testament to the diverse flavors of Mexico, making it more than just a meal, but a cultural experience. Our taste buds were serenaded by the traditional dishes, while we used this moment to reflect on our journey thus far. The buffet included rice, beans, tortillas, carne guisada, chicken, pork, an assortment of veggies, and dessert.
Chichen-Itza: Where the Past Beckons
Arriving at Chichen-Itza, we were met with a scene that resonated with history and culture. The monumental pyramids and intricate edifices transported us back in time to the Mayan civilization. The stones beneath our feet felt like conduits to the voices of long-forgotten kings and their powerful tales. Each corner of Chichen-Itza unfolded a new chapter of human history before our very eyes. The guide was excellent about explaining the many structures which includes the Market place, The Thousand Columns Group, the Ball Game, Tzompantli ( Platform of the skulls), and the wonderful Temple of Kukulcán, one of the monuments emblematic of the Mayan civilization. My personal favorite was The Ball Game area. Learning how this game/ritual was conducted and how physically demanding it was really blew my mind and is a must see.
Artisanal Souvenirs and Craft Stalls
Chichen-Itza wasn't only an archaeological treasure but also a vibrant marketplace. Rows of artisanal stalls displayed intricate crafts, vibrant textiles, and handcrafted jewelry. The souvenirs we found here were far from ordinary; they carried with them the essence of the local culture.
Tips for the Chichen-Itza Expedition
Planning Ahead: For a seamless visit, it's best to book a tour that includes transport, like the one we embarked on.
Stay Hydrated: The Mexican sun can be unforgiving, so carry a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.
Respect the Heritage: Chichen-Itza is a historical site, and it's crucial to treat it with reverence. Avoid climbing or touching the ancient structures.
Support Local Artisans: When shopping for souvenirs, consider buying from the local craftsmen. It helps preserve traditional craftsmanship and supports the local economy.
