Discovering Hidden Gems: Cenote Saamal Adventure

Writer: Jayde GrahamJayde Graham

Welcome back to Catching Caerus, fellow Travel Junkies! After our awe-inspiring visit to Chichen-Itza, my friends Jose, Ele, and I next stop to explore was the Saamal Cenote. In this blog post, we'll take you through our cenote Saamal adventure and what makes these natural wonders so extraordinary.

Cenotes: Nature's Masterpieces

Cenotes are natural sinkholes, formed when the limestone bedrock collapses and exposes the crystal-clear groundwater below. They were considered sacred by the ancient Mayans and were often used for rituals and ceremonies. Today, they are a natural wonder of Mexico.

Our Cenote Saamal Experience

Located just a short drive from Chichen-Itza, Cenote Saamal is a breathtaking cenote surrounded by lush greenery. We arrived and were amazed by the lush jungle like setting and the stunning shades of blue water.

Swimming in Azure Waters

The cool, clear water was incredibly inviting. After a quick change into your swimsuit, you can dive into the cenote. Swimming amidst the stalactites and stalagmites is like stepping into an underground paradise. The water was so clear that you could see the underwater world below.

Adventure and Relaxation

After some swimming and exploring, you can subath on the rocky ledge. There's nothing like the Yucatan sun on your skin while listening to the sounds of the jungle. We only spent about an hour here after visiting Chichen-Itza, lost in the beauty of the cenote. If you prefer a longer experience there are individual tour options to visit this site. If and when I ever visit Mexico again I would book these trips separately, after being in the sun at Chichen-Itza I was slightly exhausted and didn't take the dive into the water.

Saamal Cenote Restaurant

When we finally got hungry, we headed to the small restaurant nearby. The menu featured traditional Mexican dishes and refreshing beverages. We enjoyed some Yucatecan specialties, like cochinita pibil tacos and agua de chaya, churros, and fresh fruit smoothies. The flavors were exquisite, and it was the perfect way to refuel.

Tips for Visiting Saamal Cenote:

1. Timing is Everything: To enjoy the cenote without crowds, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Midday tends to be the busiest.

2. Wear Comfortable Swimwear: You'll spend most of your time in the water, so don't forget your swimsuit and water shoes or sandals for walking on the rocky terrain.

3. Sun Protection: The Yucatan sun can be intense, so remember sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

4. Respect Nature: Cenotes are delicate ecosystems. Please avoid using any lotions, creams, or insect repellent before entering the water to protect the cenote's pristine environment.

5. Stay Hydrated: The cenotes' cool water may trick you into thinking you're not getting sunburned or dehydrated, so stay hydrated throughout your visit.

6. Bring Cash: While there are restaurants and shops nearby, it's a good idea to bring cash as card payments may not always be accepted.

7. Take a Guided Tour: If you're not familiar with cenotes, it's a good idea to take a guided tour that includes transportation, as they can provide safety tips and local insights.

8. Safety First: Always abide by safety rules and regulations, especially when diving or cliff jumping. Remember that cenotes can have underwater caves and caverns, so only experienced divers should venture into these areas.
